O'Neil auditioned for the third season of Canadian Idol in the early months of 2005 while still at high school. The contestant was able to climb to the top ten spots because of the judges' enthusiasm for her performance. O'Neil won high praises from the judges. She was however a complete loser in the Top 10 Week and Top 9 Week of the Finals. Judges were amazed by her performance, and suggested viewers choose those who sing well, such as Melissa. O'Neil was never in the top 3 after an impressive string of performances. After two more breathtaking performances on September 7, 2005, the day that O'Neil along with Rex Goudie advanced to the competition's final two, the judge Werner said that headlines in the morning papers were going to read O'Neil beat Goudie to become the third Canadian Idol, the first female winner, and the youngest champion in the show's time . O'Neil was immediately contacted from Canadian premier Paul Martin to congratulate her for winning Canadian Idol.
